Ever wonder how you can take the bitterness out of freshly brewed tea, without loading it down with sugar?
Check out this recipe for Secret Ingredient Iced Tea using Baking Soda
Ingredients
- 10 cups water, divided
- 1/8 teaspoon baking soda (See Note)
- 7 tea bags
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 lemon, thinly sliced
- Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, bring 5 cups water to a boil over high heat. Stir in baking soda and tea bags; remove from heat, cover, and let steep 15 minutes. Remove and discard tea bags. Stir in sugar until dissolved. Add remaining water and the lemon slices. Pour into 1/2-gallon container and refrigerate 2 to 4 hours, or until chilled. Serve over ice in tall glasses and garnish with mint, if desired.

That sounds really good! I got one from someplace about how to make McDonald’s sweet tea. It calls for 2qts of water….bring to a boil, add 3 teabags, let sit for an hr., add up to a cup of sugar. It does taste just like it!
what a great idea, I drink ice tea all the time and for myself I don’t use much sugar but you know my guy likes it sweet which of course annoys his doctor so will be using this idea. Thanks
What’s the purpose of the baking soda in the ice tea?
Gets rid of the bitterness and helps to make it “sweeter” when combined with the sugar (but you don’t have to add that much sugar) HTH
